ZACATECAS
Zacatecas is the state capital city and is located in Mexico’s north-central region, 610 km (378 mi) northwest of Mexico City. Built into a very steep and narrow ravine 2450 m (8050ft) above sea level, the average temperature is 16º C (61º F).
Zacatecas is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in northern Mexico, due to its pink limestone buildings with elaborate decorations, its narrow cobblestone streets, and its wrought-iron lanterns, a wonder destination with its own unique charm, beauty, history, and culture. Declared a World Heritage Site, the city has some wonderful buildings such as the majestic cathedral which boarders the small open square known as the Plaza de Armas. This cathedral is considered to b e one of the most important expressions of Baroque architecture in all of Mexico.
One way to enjoy this beautiful city and see some breathtaking views is by Teleferico, or cable car, suspended 85 meters (280 feet) up, which runs across the city to the Cerro de la Bufa, a hill where you’ll find various historical attractions including a lovely chapel.
Founded in 1542, Zacatecas was one of the most important mining cities in the nation, as it is build around some very rich silver mines. It quickly grew into one of Mexico’s chief mining centres. It is understood that it was the silver from Zacatecas which paid for the majority of the wars of the Spanish Empire. The Eden mine, one of the city’s main tourist attractions, offers tours by train through 600 meters (1,980 feet) of underground mine tunnels.
In the city’s surrounding areas you can visit the Sierra de Organos, which has served as a setting for several international film productions, and the Sierra de Cardos, both of which are full of stunning natural beauty and scenery. Finally you can visit La Quemada, one of the state’s most important archaeological sites.
