SAN LUIS POTOSI
The city of San Luis Potosi is also the state capital, and is located in Mexico’s central region. The city is situated 6157 ft above sea level, and the climate varies considerably, with an average year-round temperature is 17º C (63º F).
Known as the City of Seven Neighborhoods, the area was originally set up as a Franciscan Mission in 1583, and the city was founded shortly after in 1592. During its early years it saw rapid growth, due to the rich gold and silver mines in the area, much of which made up the Mexican treasure that loaded the Spanish galleons. San Luis Potosi features some beautiful baroque and neoclassical architecture, such as the Teatro de la Paz and El Templo de San Francisco. The Church of Nuestra Senora del Carmen is a beautiful example of Spanish baroque architecture, which features colorful tiled domes, and has one of the most famous sculptural altars and façade, considered to be one of the finest in Mexico. The Federico Silva Museum, which boasts Latin America’s first-ever contemporary sculpture collection, and the Centro Taurino Potosino, which houses regional history and cultural exhibits, are interesting tourist visits. Within the city centre is the colonial Plaza de Armas, where the Cathedral and the governor’s palace, built in 1770, is located. San Luis Potosi also benefits from a rich culture and lively atmosphere, with wonderful swimming resorts, beautiful restaurants, and exciting nightlife.
Surrounding the city is Laguna de Media Luna (Half Moon Lagoon), which is an ideal and beautiful spot for scuba diving, camping and outdoor activities. The Sotano de las Golondrinas is an incredible abyss that drops 512 meters (1,690 feet), and the Sotano de las Guaguas, which has one of the biggest caves in the world with a ceiling that is 291 meters (960 feet) high, are fascinating destinations that draw tourists from all over. Finally, don’t forget to visit ghost town Real de Catorce, an old mining town full of magic and legends.
