San Blas is located on the Pacific coast, 62 km (38 mi) northwest of Tepic, the state capital of Nayarit. It has a warm humid tropical climate, with an average year-round temperature of 25º C (77º F).
Most people come to San Blas for the beaches. Playas Hermosa and El Borrego are the city’s two main beaches that extends for about 1.5 miles and offer peaceful calm waters, with nearby Las Islitas, in Matanchan Bay, being popular for extended surfing due to its long gentle waves. San Blas is also rich in its abundance of wild bird life, which migrate to the surrounding estuaries and lowland forests. It is also located at the edge of the La Tovara National Park, a massive protected mangrove forest that is only accessible via small tour boats. A popular trip is taken by boat through the mangroves to the La Tovara Spring, which is a natural pool where you can swim. The Las Palmas Crocodile Refuge is another local attraction where a large number of crocodile can be seen in their surrounding natural environment.
Overlooking the town of San Blas is the Contaduria, a hillside fort built in 1770 as offices for the town’s extensive sea trade with the Orient. And you can also visit the nearby ruins of The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in 1769, which once contained the famous bronze ‘bells of San Blas’, offering an insight into the local culture and history of San Blas. With history that includes colonial conquests, pirate invasions and battles for Mexico’s independence, the natural beauty and peaceful setting of San Blas offer a unique destination.
