COAHUILA
TORREON
The city of Torreon is located in Mexico’s northern region in southwest Coahuila, 278 km (172 mi) from state capital Saltillo. The climate is hot and dry, with an average year-round temperature of 24º C (75º F). During the summer, however, the temperature can reach 40º (104º F).
Due to its important commercial, economic and industrial activity, Torreon is known as the City of Great Endeavors. Torreon has an interesting Historic Center where you can visit some beautiful religious buildings such as the modern Catedral del Carmen (Carmen Cathedral); the Casino de la Laguna which one of the city’s most famous buildings, and the Isauro Martinez Theater, one of Mexico’s best theatres. On offer are a number of museums to visit which display the city’s history and the important role it played during the Mexican Revolution.
Not to be missed is the spectacular Cristo de las Noas, a monumental sculpture of Jesus that stands more than 20 meters (66 feet) tall at the top of the Cerro de las Noas. This figure is the most important spiritual symbol for the residents of Torreon and La Laguna region. From here you can get a wonderful birds-eye view out over the city.
In the city’s surrounding areas, where semidesert landscape dominates, are incredible natural habitats like the Bilbao Dunes, which are ideal for sandboarding, and the Valle de Cuatrocienegas (Cuatro Cienegas Valley), which has turquoise-blue ponds formed by fresh water springs. Finally, there’s the mysterious Zona del Silencio (Zone of Silence), where visitors claim to experience paranormal phenomena, the absence of sound and loss of radio signals.

SALTILLO
Saltillo is the state capital of Coahuila, and is located in Mexico’s northern region. Elevated at 1600 meters, the average year-round temperature is 17.5º C (63º F) and the climate is predominantly arid and semi-cold, with rainfall in the summer.
The city of Saltillo is the oldest city in north Mexico and is known as the Athens of the North due to its great cultural traditions, reflecting its mixed heritage through such festivities as the Santo Cristo de la Capilla. It’s also famous for its saltillos, cotton and wool serapes of various designs and bright colors, which have become one of the nation’s most representative articles of clothing. Also of interest is Saltillo’s eclectic architecture, the old core of the city is built in pink marble, and integrates neoclassical and Spanish baroque styles to give the city a very architecturally distinctive flavour. In the latter you can learn about the important contributions of local artists and the region’s historical development and biological evolution. Both museums are world class and certainly worth the visit.
In the surrounding areas you can visit Rincon Colorado, one of the main sites where dinosaur fossils have been discovered. There’s also the beautiful natural sights of Sierra de Arteaga, which has been developed as an important regional tourist and sporting destination. In addition, you can visit the Bosques de Monterreal Park, a unique place where you can go skiing on slopes with manmade snow throughout the year. What’s more, the park offers canyon and mountain areas that are ideal for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. The gorgeous scenery of the Coahuila sierras is absolutely fascinating.
