The city has much interesting and well preserved history, and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002. Campeche was an old commercial port and is surrounded by a giant wall, with forts, bulwarks and historic gates, which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries where they once protected the city from pirate attacks.
Within the city walls there are some spectacular buildings and wonderful examples of Mexico property, such as the Cathedral and the Templo de Guadalupe, and within the forts are some museums such as the Museo de la Cultura Maya and the Museo de las Estelas Mayas, which has some interesting art on exhibit.
