CLIMATE
In general Mexico’s weather originates from the East and South in summer and from the North and West in winter. Due to Mexico’s vast land expanse and extreme diversity in terrain, the climate ranges significantly.
Northern Mexico. Known for its extreme weather conditions, where the winters can be cold with high winds up in the mountains, and summers are hot and desert dry. The extremes of elevations, such as is found in the Copper Canyon, see dramatic weather extremes, from snow in the winter on the high regions, to excessively hot summer temperatures reaching over 48º C (110º F) in the lower valleys. Winter is the rainy season, and October to December and March to April are the best times of the year to visit.
Central Mexico. With vast natural mountainous terrain, the climate varies greatly, but is generally, on average, more mild. Summer is the rainy season, but the higher elevations tends to reduce the humidity to a very comfortable level. Winter often brings very cold temperatures at night, with daytime temperatures ranging anywhere from low teensº C (50’sº F) to low 20’sº C (low 70’sº F).
Southern Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. The weather here has tropical high humidity and is far wetter, throughout the year, than the west coast along the Pacific. Summers are always hot and steamy and hurricanes are a frequent occurrence to this area of Mexico in the summer. Winters are usually much cooler. The best weather is from December to February. Winter temperatures average around the low 20’sº C (high 60’sº F), with summer temperatures often reaching 40º C (104º F).

The Yucatan Peninsula. With a tropical and hot climate along the coast, and an even hotter climate inland, the Caribbean coastal winds keep the average year round temperature at 33º C (91º F). Inland on the Yucatan Peninsular is even hotter, with temperatures in summer commonly reaching to 46º C (115º F). This region along the Yucatan Peninsular has a definite Caribbean climate with warm sea waters. Summer also sees frequent hurricanes to this area. Winter can have cold drizzly weather with overcast skies and blustery winds, but is most commonly cool temperatures around the low 20’sº C (high 70’sº F) during the evening and reaching to high 20’sº C (low 80’sº F) during the day. Clear blue skies during the winter are the norm. The best months to visit weather wise are November to February.
The Pacific Coast. Along the central west Pacific Coast you will find arguably the best winter weather in Mexico, the weather is very dependable and constant, with temperatures during the day averaging 29-32º C (85-89º F), and evenings averaging 18-21º C (65-70º F). Summers bring oppressive heat and humidity, and are generally the rainy seasons. Winter storms are not common, and the best weather is between December to March. Further south again towards Acapulco you will experience tropical climate with very hot humid weather. With more sunny days throughout they year than most other destinations in the world, the average winter day is 32º C (90º F) and the evenings drop to around 21º C (70º F). Summers are the primary rainy season, and hurricanes can occur during these months. The best time to visit is December to February.
The Baja California Peninsula. Fronting onto the Pacific Ocean on the west of the Baja Peninsular, the temperatures are generally cooler here than along the Sea of Cortez. The further south you head along the Gulf of Mexico, the warmer the weather becomes. In the north, along the Sea of Cortez, the waters are warm, and the temperatures remain around 26º C (79º F) to 28º C (82º F). Winter days are mild, but the nights can become quite cool, and the humidity in winter still remains at around 30-50%. The rainy season is in winter, and cold winter storms can travel from the United States in the north. Summer temperatures can be very hot with high humidity, heading towards 80%. The best weather is from November to February. On the tip of the Baja Peninsular the summer temperatures often reach 43º C (110º F).
